Mullan) je irski imigrant koji se naselio u Kaliforniji za vreme zlatne groznice pre 18 godina. Danas je Dilon vlasnik gotovo svakog dućana i poduzetništva u gradu Kingdom Kom – od iznajmljivanja soba pa do otvaranja bankovnih računa, ništa se ne može obaviti bez njegovog znanja. Jedan od retkih poslova kojima se ne bavi je vođenje javne kuće. To je prepustio svojoj ljubavnici Lusiji (M. Jovovich). Ali situacija se menja kada se u gradiću pojavi Dalgliš (W. Bentley), koji radi za železnicu. Shvativši da mu se pruža velika poslovna tj. komercijalna prilika, Dilon nastoji da osigura prolaz pruge kroz grad. Vinterbotom je nastojao da realistično približi gledaocima život u američkom gradiću krajem 19. veka i pri tome potpuno uspeo. Od prikaza krajolika, stvaranja atmosfere i uverljivih nastupa glumaca, filmska ekipa osmislila je film koji baca drugačiji pogled na žanr vesterna.
