Bendžamin je nadigrao Linkolna mudro predstavljajući slučaj državnih prava Juga ne kao očuvanje ropstva, već kao slobodu privatnog vlasništva. Bendžaminov potez je uspeo. Borba za slobodu, a ne ropstvo, je otvorilo put za Evropski ulazak u rat. Uz pomoć nekoliko divizija britanskih i francuskih trupa, Lijeve armije su kod Getizburga potukle snage Unije. Kada su ti federalni vojnici videli te Francuske i Britanske trupe kako se postavljaju na jednu i drugu stranu Lijevih krila, mnogi od njih su jednostavno pukli i pobegli.
