• Dok je 1853. godine na Divljem zapadu bilo čak 60 miliona bizona, zbog skupoće njihovih koža i nekontrolisanog lova za samo tri decenije taj broj se smanjio na tek 30.000. Među onima koji su nekada intenzivno lovili bizone je i Sendi MekKenzi (S. Granger), sada stočar i vlasnik malog ranča kome je za održavanje imanja potreban novac. Stoga Sendi nakon upoznavanja revolveraša Čarlija Gilsona (R. Taylor) pristane na njegov predlog da zajedno krenu u poslednji lov na bizone koji bi im se obojici trebao itekako isplatiti. Sa njima kreću i iskusni tragač Džimi O'Brajen (R. Tamblyn), poluindijanac koji je pobegao iz rezervata, i grubi i džangrizavi Vudfut (L. Nolan). Kada se ubrzo pokaže da Gilson patološki mrzi i Indijance, tenzije između njega i Sendija će početi da rastu. A sve će se dodatno zakomplikovati kada jedan Indijanac ukrade mazgu iz njihovog logora, nakon čega Gilson u znak odmazde napravi pravi pokolj među Indijancima. Jedini koje poštedi su mlada Indijanka (D. Paget) i njeno dete. Prvi od tri vesterna koje je tokom karijere režirao čuveni Ričard Bruks (Profesionalci, Zagrizi metak), izuzetno je uspela adaptacija istoimenog romana Miltona Lota.
